Lake Sybelia’s Dolphin Dash 5K Runs Strong for Third Year

Dolphin Dash 2015 6With the hard work of school families, support of local sponsors and the help of community volunteers, Lake Sybelia Elementary celebrated another successful Dolphin Dash 5K on Nov. 14.

On this beautiful fall morning, more than 300 runners and walkers took part in the race, which raised about $25,000 for the school. And nearly 100 kids showed off their speed during a Kids Mile Dash that followed the 5K. After crossing the finish line, students celebrated their fundraising success with a “Bounce Bash” complete with bounce houses, an inflatable slide and an obstacle course.

“Dolphin Dash 5K is about fun, family and fitness,” said Lake Sybelia Elementary principalDolphin Dash 2015 4 Julie Paradise. “Thanks to the energy and enthusiasm of our students and teachers, we were able to raise much-needed funds for our school while promoting healthy habits for our families.”

The money raised through the third annual event will be used to support Lake Sybelia teachers and enhance technology resources for its students. Last year, PTA purchased 30 laptop tablets for students with the proceeds from the race. This year, more laptops are on the way to classrooms and the “WLSE Morning News” crew will get new production equipment.

But enhancing the school’s educational technology isn’t the only benefit of the 5K event. Three years ago, fourth grade teacher Mel Soto started a school running club called the Dolphin Dash 2015 1Dolphin Dashers to help kids prepare for the inaugural race. Today, the club is running strong with more than 90 student members.

Lake Sybelia is already planning next year’s race, so keep an eye out for the date of the 2016 Dolphin Dash 5K!
