February is School Based Health Care Awareness Month

February is School Based Health Care Awareness Month!

All children and adolescents deserve to thrive. But too many struggle because they lack access to health care services. School-based health care is part of the solution, bringing health care to where students already spend the majority of their time: in school. When health and education come together, great things happen. Attendance improves. Conditions like asthma or diabetes are better managed. Behavioral health issues get quick, expert attention.

Recognizing unmet health care needs often get in the way of learning, leaders from the Winter Park Health Foundation (WPHF), Glenridge Middle School, Winter Park High School and Orange County Public Schools (OCPS) have established the School-Based Health Centers at Glenridge Middle School and Winter Park High School.   (Click here for information on the Cheney Wellness Cottage, developed in cooperation with WPHF and OCPS)

The School-Based Health Centers offer a variety of services to take care of students’ physical health needs.

Pediatric Nurse Practitioner services are available through the financial support of WPHF and in partnership with Healthcare Providers of Florida. The locations for the School-Based Health Centers are provided by Glenridge Middle School and Winter Park High School.

Services are available to those students within the Winter Park Consortium of schools whose families don’t have adequate health care coverage or access to a health care provider for their children.  The Consortium includes Winter Park High School and its elementary and middle feeder schools.

The many medical services provided FREE of charge by the Nurse Practitioners at the two centers include sports and school physicals, as well as diagnosis and treatment of illnesses.

Visits are by appointment only.

For more information, visit the School Based Health Center section of our website.
