Let’s Move! Childcare Recognizes Cheney Elementary

Heidi Butterfield is a teacher for pre-kindergarten students at Cheney Elementary in Florida, and she desired to increase physical activity in her classroom. To achieve this goal, Heidi participated in the National Early Care and Education Learning Collaborative program (ECELC) in 2016-2017. Bad weather and lack of shade were a few of the many challenges Heidi faced with having only an outdoor space for her students. By participating in the ECELC program, Heidi knew she needed to create space indoors, especially with the current center policy requiring indoor recess days.

Fresh Stop Makes a Surprise Holiday Visit to Cheney Elementary

Students at Cheney Elementary received a surprise before the holiday break — Fresh Stop, a mobile farmer’s market serving food desert communities in Central Florida — made a special stop at Cheney for a holiday produce give-away. Students received a small gift, apple cider and over 2,000 lbs of produce were donated.

Cheney Students Receive Free Dental Screenings

In April, Cheney Wellness Cottage dental staff partnered with Cheney Elementary to provide free dental screenings for all students.

During the dental screenings, Cheney Wellness Cottage dental staff provided an oral screening (without x-rays), information about proper nutrition, and provided an oral hygiene “goody bag” for every child.  Children brushed and flossed their teeth under the supervision of a dental assistant along with instructions on proper brushing.

The screenings were free for all children and if the child had dental insurance, the insurance was not billed.  All students were eligible for the screening regardless of whether they have a dentist who they see regularly.
