Swimming Lessons for Brookshire Students

From August 28 to October 12, 2018, students at Brookshire Elementary made their way to Cady Way Pool where they splashed, kicked, and had a whole lot of fun as they improved their swimming skills.  236 Brookshire students from Kindergarten through fifth grade received lessons from Coach Topps and volunteers.

As always, it takes a village to make special programs like this successful.  Thanks to the City of Winter Park Parks & Recreation, the Track Shack Youth Foundation, and the Brookshire Additions Volunteers & PTA for their support!

Brookshire Elementary Celebrates Thanksgiving

Brookshire celebrated Thanksgiving in many ways last week. Many Brookshire families enjoyed a Thanksgiving Feast with their child as they dined on a turkey dinner in the Brookshire cafeteria on Thursday afternoon. This was a wonderful reminder of they are thankful for.

Brooskhire’s extended day students decorated the cafeteria with turkeys and wrote what they are thankful for. The school’s Partners in Education, RMCAD, came to volunteer to help serve families during the luncheon. Martha Albright, Brookshire’s cafeteria manager, and her team made the event possible. The Student Council worked tirelessly collecting food from all of the classrooms that donated food for those in need.

Make a Difference in the Life of a Child

Volunteers Needed to Make a Difference in the Life of a Child in Winter Park and Eatonville through CATCH Healthy Habits!

Do you like working with children? Like working in a team? Then join the Rollins CATCH Healthy Habits, a program where adults age 50 + and children grades K-5 learn together the benefits of healthy eating and exercise. The children and adults have a lot of fun as they learn together how to stay healthy and fit. Volunteers work in teams of six to eight with children in school settings and other youth organizations.

The Rollins Center for Lifelong Learning is the local sponsor of this program. All training and class materials are provided free of charge. CATCH Healthy Habits is funded through a grant from the Winter Park Health Foundation to Rollins College.

The Rollins CATCH Healthy Habits is a wonderful way to improve your health and celebrate healthy living while making a difference in your community with just one hour a week for 8 weeks. This summer classes are at the Winter Park Community Center, Eatonville Boys & Girls Club, and Brookshire Elementary School.

Contact Holly Tanyhill at 407-646-2459 or email htanyhill@rillins.edu

Next training is May 17 & 18 from 1 – 5 pm on the Rollins College campus.

Celebrate Food Service During National Nutrition Month

As March and the celebration of National Nutrition Month comes to an end, we would like to give a shot out to all those who work in school food service (special thank you to Orange County Public Schools – Food and Nutrition Services)

Food service staff are responsible for preparing and serving meals for thousands of kids every day, while food service directors have the added responsibility of managing budgets and adhering to state and federal nutrition regulations. It’s a tough job!

For the remainder of this month, let’s celebrate the hard-working food service professionals around the country who strive to put healthy, tasty and affordable meals on the plates of each child in the cafeteria line.
