There are multiple holidays still to hurdle, but the 10th annual Fast Start Track & Field Invitational on January 31 is coming up quickly, and registration is now underway. The deadline for turning in the sign-up forms is December 5.
Fast Start, which gives local elementary school students to have fun while joining in events like the long jump, the shot put, the 4 by 100 meter relay, and various other running events, is held at Winter Park High School’s Showalter Field in Winter Park. The event runs from 8 a.m. to about 2:30 p.m.
The free event is open to students at Aloma, Audubon Park, Brookshire, Cheney, Dommerich, Hungerford, Lake Sybelia and Lakemont elementary schools.
Designed to instill a love of running and healthy activity in children, Fast Start was created by Scott Millson, a Winter Park parent and principal for Millson James 10 years ago. Its popularity continues to grow, and last year, more than 1,000 students signed up to participate.
Millson said special features will be added to mark the event’s 10th anniversary, among them, a panel made up of students who participated in the first Fast Start who are now running on high school and college teams. They will speak to elementary age runners at the pre-event pasta party on January 30. Pasta party sign-up information will be provided to parents in mid-December.
Stay tuned for more information on 10th anniversary additions!
