Nancy Mooney, nurse at WPHS and Healthy School Team Co-Leader, said the event was a great success and she is hoping for even more participation next year. She said her goal will be to inspire some friendly competition between all Orange County Public School (OCPS) learning communities. The winner would be the learning community able to muster the most participants.

Ms. Mooney said the Winter Park group included most walkers, but some were runners. Some used a training regimen available online, but others trained on their own. All joined together at the race to dine on healthy snacks they brought along.533964_10200096121138456_1702094242_n[1]

A highlight of the event occurred at the start of the race when participants sang a chorus of “Sweet Caroline” in tribute to the victims and survivors of the bombings at the Boston Marathon.

Race director and Track Shack co-owner Jon Hughes also asked athletes to place a hand across their heart as they crossed the finish line to dedicate their run to the bombing victims.
