The 8th annual Fast Start Track & Field Invitational on February 2 was a huge success—especially for students at Lakemont Elementary School, and their enthusiastic coach and Healthy School Team Leader, Jon Siegel.
This year, an anonymous donor offered a $350 prize to the school that had the highest participation in Fast Start. To level the playing field, the prize was to be awarded to the school that had the greatest percentage of students entered in the competition actually show up for the event.
“Lakemont had an astounding 92% participation percentage at this year’s event!” said Scott Millson, founder of Fast Start. Lakemont had some 140 students registered for the event. “Our average participation was a little higher than previous years at 74%,” he added.
The Fast Start event was designed to inspire a love of physical activity among students attending the elementary schools in the Winter Park Consortium of Schools: Aloma, Audubon Park, Brookshire, Cheney, Dommerich, Hungerford, Lake Sybelia and Lakemont. A record-breaking 800 plus students participated this year.
Plans already are underway for next year’s event. It is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, Feb.1, 2014. Mark your calendars!
