Lake Sybelia Elementary School’s successful Walking School Bus, which started as a Healthy School Team project, has gathered support from throughout the school—including the PTA, parents and students. And during the upcoming school year, Susan Maddox, Lake Sybelia’s Healthy School Team leader, said she expects the number of participants to grow and new walking routes to be added.
Walking School Buses involve volunteer parents accompanying students as they bike and walk to school. The program means fewer cars in the car pool line and more safe and fun physical activity for students.
During the 2011-2012 school year, walking groups averaged 20 to 30 students. The program ended the year with a Walking Dance Party school bus so that students could dance their way to school. Teachers handed out 49 certificates stating the number of miles each child walked while participating in the program. Together, students walked a total of 919 walks for a total of 627 miles. The bus had representatives from at least 20 Lake Sybelia classrooms—four kindergarten classes, five first grade classes, four second grade classes, three third grade classes, three fourth grade classes and one fifth grade class.
