At Cheney Elementary, the Healthy School Team got help from an Orange County Public Schools dietician to host a science night for students during the 2011-12 school year. Students learned about the properties of matter and about acids and bases as they participated in experiments— including making glue out of milk using household products. They also learned about the different proteins contained in milk.
HST Leader Myrna Veyna said the school also held a Walkathon as a fundraiser to support school field trips. Students obtained sponsors for the laps they walked around the school.
In addition, a Zumba Family Night was a huge hit. Teachers, who also participated in regular Zumba classes at school, performed at the school’s talent show dancing to a Zumba song.
