Each year Audubon Park Elementary hosts a Health Expo in the middle of Healthy Living Week. The good health extravaganza was bigger and better than ever during the 2011-12 school year, with a wide variety of local health-related businesses participating. These, according to Healthy School Team (HST) Leader Monica Soule, ranged from Whole Foods Market and the American Heart Association to area doctors and dentists and the school’s nurse who conducted free blood pressure screenings.
The event, which draws students, families and staff, also included a blood drive.
Events throughout the week—as well as the Health Expo—are designed to teach students how to live a healthy lifestyle—and to encourage them to do so, said Ms. Soule.
In addition to the student-focused activities, a weekly Healthy School Team newsletter, featuring advice on good nutrition, exercising, stress-reduction and disease awareness, is prepared weekly and distributed to teachers and staff, according to Ms. Soule.
